Nestled in the charming town of Byfield, MA, Rusty Can is a barbecue restaurant that stands out as a true haven for smoked meat enthusiasts. From the moment you walk through its doors at 6 Fruit St, you’re invited into a warm, inviting atmosphere filled with the aromas of slow-cooked, well-seasoned meats and the buzz of satisfied diners savoring their meals.
Rusty Can’s menu is a celebration of classic American barbecue done with genuine care and expertise. Their 2 Meat Combo featuring Brisket & Pulled Pork accompanied by creamy cole slaw and crispy fries is a perfect introduction to the smoky flavors that define the kitchen’s skill. For those craving indulgence, the Brisket Bomb sandwich—packed with tender, juicy meat—is a hearty masterpiece that customers can’t stop talking about. The Brisket Nachos turn traditional Tex-Mex into a BBQ delight, layered with succulent slices of brisket that add depth and richness with every bite.
Beyond the meats, Rusty Can elevates Southern comfort sides with standouts like their creamy Mac & Cheese—rich and velvety without being overpowering—and crispy Hush Puppies served with a tangy pickled corn tartar sauce that offers a delightful contrast to the smoky meats. The St. Louis Ribs, as multiple patrons have raved, are the true showstoppers: perfectly cooked so the ribs fall off the bone, tender and mouthwatering, delivering a deep smoky flavor that melts away the moment they hit your tongue.
Rusty Can is equally impressive behind the bar, offering an enticing lineup of bourbons and whiskeys, including the featured Weller Special Reserve Wheated Bourbon as the Whiskey of the Week and premium selections like Woodford Reserve, Maker’s Mark, and the rare Weller Larue 7yr. Whether you opt for a classic adult beverage or prefer a root beer complementing your meal, the bar enhances the dining experience without overshadowing the food.
The restaurant’s vibe strikes a balance between a laid-back sports bar and a cozy neighborhood cookout—attentive servers, a manageable crowd even on football days, and the perfect level of noise to encourage conversation without overwhelming. Customers like Stella Wei and Chaz have noted the friendly staff and quick service, emphasizing that every visit feels genuine and well-paced.
Noteworthy dishes extend beyond the BBQ classics, including unique offerings such as Chicken Fried Ribs, Pork Belly and Mojo Chicken Tacos, Cuban Sandwich Cubano, and Philly Cheese Steak, all demonstrating Rusty Can’s inventive twist on comfort food. Sweet endings like their rich and nutty Pecan Pie solidify the meal with a satisfying finish.
In essence, Rusty Can captures the heart and soul of authentic American barbecue, expertly combining robust flavors, quality ingredients, and an inviting environment that locals and travelers alike cherish. Whether you’re craving a smoky feast or just a place to unwind with expertly crafted drinks, Rusty Can delivers an experience that stays with you long after the last bite.
This place is hands down one of the best, if not the best, BBQ spot in the area. All the meats were well seasoned and tender. The ribs were falling off the bone. The Mac and cheese was also extremely creamy. Highly recommend checking this place out.
A good BBQ sports bar with attentive servers and the best ribs I’ve ever had. I would go back simply to have the ribs again, fall off the bone and melt in your mouth. Quick food service and is usually busier on football days. Not the most amount of seating on the inside, but when it is packed it’s not that loud either
I got the brisket bomb sandwich and an order of fries, and both were excellent. The sandwich is huge and more than I could eat in one sitting. Plus they have PBR on tap!! I definitely plan to go back if i am in the area.
Friendly staff, great bbq... brisket bomb sub was to die for. Seemed like a good selection of local beers but in the middle of a road trip so i went with root beer. Easy access to route I95
I’ve heard amazing things about the Rusty Can for years & finally decided to try it. No regrets, the pulled pork is amazing, tender & juicy and flavorful. The ribs are also very good. The BBQ meats are good period. The Mac and cheese is like stove top, not baked. Very good though & a decent sized portion. The collard greens should immediately be removed off the menu, im not sure if it’s a regional thing but all I tasted was vinegar & water, not good at all. The cornbread was a bit dry both times I went but the butter that came with it really saved it & me from choking from how dry they were. The wings are immaculate. Highly suggest the buffalo wings, very unique buffalo sauce but I was in love. Juicy, hot, and crispy. I give one star for the really shitty service we received. I figured it was just our server but when I came back again, another server was just as rude. I will say though, it may be for the simple fact how the manager speaks to them. We witnessed a manager or a superior barking at several bussers & waitresses.
Greatest food I've ever had. I got the brisket bomb and WOW... I have never had brisket before but I was blown away by how amazing it was. I ate a lot earlier in the day so I only could finish half of it, but next day (today) I reheated the other half in the toaster and WOW again, tasted even better than fresh, because the bread was toasted and crunchy. I love the atmosphere and the food came out insanely quickly, the food came within 10 minutes of ordering, it actually might have been closer to 5 minutes. Very friendly staff and a great rustic bar feel, very Midwest feely.
The restaurant was right off. The highway, seemed like a rustic bar to me. I was greeted quickly and handed a drink soon after. As you can tell from my pictures, I grabbed the three meat platter. Everything on the platter was fantastic. If you have not been that is your loss. Everybody back of house was humming right along and the food came out quickly, they are absolute Masters. Thank you all very much for taking care of me as I pass through. The bartenders and waitresses were very kind as we're the patrons.
Best BBQ in Massachusetts, but not as good as Texas BBQ. This is the second time we’ve been here despite the 50 min drive and would come back again. It was pretty busy but they seated us very quickly, the appetizer wings came within 10 mins and the rest of the food within 20 mins. For the serious foodie review: Brisket: 7/10 a bit dry and underseasoned Pulled pork: 8.5/10 nice pure porky flavor, no extras, juicy and evenly shredded Pork ribs: 9.5/10 this is the standout item on the menu, very juicy but tender, perfectly seasoned BBQ chicken wings: 8/10 juicy and seasoned well BBQ black beans: 7.5/10 great flavor, a bit too sweet, I’m not a beans person but still enjoyed it. My partner is a beans person and he gave it an 8.5/10 Collard greens: 8/10 pretty solid, a little too vinegary for my taste.
